Yohannes IV was crowned by Dejazmach Kassa of Tigray in 1872. Even though his power was based in Debre Berhan, he relocated to Meqelle in the same year. Yohannes was a committed Christian, Nationalist, and a great military leader. When he built his palace, he made sure the palace was surrounded by churches to show his dedication to Christianity. This lased right up to his death in 1889 at the battle of Metema. The palace now serves as a museum. The Emperor’s throne, royal bed, ceremonial dress, rifles and many other valuable historical collections can be seen in the palace.

Chele’anqua is a name given to a fall found in the village of Debri just 6Km south of Mekelle. The village can be reached from different pathways that diverge from the city: from Hawlti monument and from Adi-Hawsi settlement. After passing a flat agricultural land locally known as “Maida Debri” one can visit the village which is the major supplier of guava fruit to Mekelle. Debri holds a remarkable waterfall in itself. Cruising like a missile the water falls some 300 meters deep into a gorge. The dangling cliff is made of huge black basalt rock and seems wisely curved to fit with the water and create a graceful view.

The small village of Chelekot (aka Celicut), set on a green hill 17km south of Mekelle, was a far more important settlement than the modern capital in the early 19th century. Chelekot housed the court of the Tigrayan prince Ras Wolde Sellasie, who, prior to his death in 1816, was probably the most powerful regional ruler in Ethiopia at a time when the imperial court at Gonder had little influence beyond its immediate vicinity.
